Freedom of Speech

I have a question for everyone. My journalism professor (who is also chair of the department) told us in class on Friday that "free speech is regulated by time, place and manner". He used the example of the classroom. We, as students, could get up and dance on the tables and say whatever we felt like saying and that would technically qualify as free speech. But he, as the professor and authority in the room, could tell us to get out and we would have to obey or face consequences.

I still haven't completely processed this and figured out what it means and what I think so I wanted to ask you to help clarify.

What does the first amendments freedom of speech mean to you? Who owns freedom of speech?

just because we have freedom of speech doesn't mean we shouldn't use wisdom. To me, wisdom is more important and if we use wisdom, our view of freedom of speech will probably be different. The Bible also says to respect our authorities.

I have finally had the time to review some of the posts I had missed so....

Freedom of anything is not to be construed as the ability to do whatever you want that may impinge on the rights of others. That strange philosophy said...you have the right to say whatever you want about anything as long as you are not hurting, threatening or distorting or destroying others. And, and this is the biggie, in our society we, as the collective get to decide what constitutes hurting, threatening or distoring or destroying. In another words we make rules or laws that do not restrict your ability to speak freely but keep order and security. It all comes down to the fact that to make the democracy work ALLLLLLLLLLLL must participate. Something we could all stand to think about.

Love you,
Mom
